Everyone wants to be associated with the media

I have been keeping a keen eye on this website, especially as it relates to the members. Everyone is saying that they have or do work in the media. But the irony about the situation is some have never even written a press release in their lives, furthermore a news story.
I wonder what is so fascinating about the media that everyone wants to be associated with it.

Actually Dwayne, some are journalism students like myself trying to learn from experienced journalists and may have careers outside of the profession.

Your comment is somewhat naive. The media is but a vehicle for the communication of a myriad of forms of communication. If you are familiar with journalism as praxis, you will realize that as Zeeska said there are many people whose careers are ex-journalism but who have an interest in the profession. It is not an obsession, unless you are speaking of psychotic or socio pathic attention seekers or equally depraved attention-seeking journalist who make up stories. The media serves several purposes, such a flippant comment belies some inexperience in the entire area of journalism. Indeed, press releases do not qualify as journalism either (not in the real sense) but then, we are all here to learn.

I was only being scarstic when I questioned "what is so fascinating about the media that everyone wants to be associated with it".
The point that I was making was basic. The media are an important agent of socialization in society and everyone seems bent on jumping in the "field"... even those who donot know anything about the ethical principles which guide the profession.
It seems fashionable for people to say that they work or have worked in the media because of the glare associated with it.... people who even lie to say they worked in the media.
