I have a paper to write the topic is "Journalists can be dangerous people. They are the ones who decide what we see, hear and read. Discuss".
Do you know about any good books or material that I can read?

I'm probably not the best person to suggest a book for academic purposes (I refused to buy a single book for my last 2 years at UWI) but if you can find it, 'My Trade' by Andrew Marr is good - it is a history of British journalism but it also deals quite a bit with agenda setting in the news media.

It might also be worth it to explore whether in this day and cyber-age, do journalists still have that dangerous power as implied in your essay title. What with the rise of citizen journalism, are journalists really still the ones who decide what people see, hear and read? Folks are doing it for themselves. I did a paper loosely related to this for an educational organisation when I was at Warwick - it dealt with citizen journalism. I'll attach some of the material I used that might be useful to you. Good luck!

Thanks very much. I will not even both to check the library for that book because as you know Mona library has nothing. The online sources you provided are helpful. Thanks. It appears to me the library is not the place to study, but rather a place for loud discussions, checking email, playing games on the computer and gossiping.

Hi Dwayne. Interesting topic. I will also suggest that you read Media & Society - it should be in the Mona Library. I saw it there when I visited. The question is really also looking at the various roles of the media as gatekeeper, shaper and moulders of public thinking etc. The roles are multi-faceted but you must zero in on the ones which deal with the newspaper engaging with the audience, so audience & reception is a theoretical area you must explore.

But this is a quick response. I will check my library and then send you links in a bit. Just want you to know, I haven't ignored.

Doesn't Hopeton Dunn speak of it in his book "the Caribbean, Media & Globalization"

"Journalism as Praxis" is another great book.

Best,
Kim

Don't forget sleeping Dwayne. I got some of my best naps in the library's overnight reading room. I would go there with all good intentions and within half hour I would be out cold and dribbling. :D
